Am I the bad guy for not letting my stepson's mom sleep over in our guest room for his birthday?
I'm 32, my husband's 38, we've been married three years. His son Leo is 9 and he's with us about half the week. I genuinely love that kid. A bit on his mom, Dana. We're mostly okay we can be at the same birthday party, we text about pickups without it turning into a thing. But she has a way of asking for stuff that's small on paper but puts me in a corner. Last summer she asked to "swing by and grab a couple of Leo's things" and ended up at our kitchen table for almost two hours. Nothing awful. It's just that saying no to any of it tends to make me the cold one, so I usually don't. So this year we were having Leo's birthday at our place. A few days before, Dana texted asking if she could stay in our guest room the night before, so she wouldn't miss him waking up on his actual birthday. She's about 25 minutes away.

I'll be honest, my first reaction was kind of "seriously?" I texted back that she was more than welcome to come over early as early as she wanted but that I wasn't comfortable with her sleeping over. It's my husband's ex, in my house, down the hall from us. I couldn't get past it. My husband was kind of in the middle on it. At first he shrugged and said it was probably fine, it's one night. But when I actually pushed him on how he'd feel with her sleeping here, he admitted it would be a little weird for him too. I think mostly he just didn't want to be the one to say no to her, so it ended up being me who did. Dana took it hard. She said I'm getting in between her and her son, and that I'm turning Leo's birthday into something about my comfort. That one stuck with me, because I don't think that's what I'm doing but I also can't completely swear it isn't.

My husband's sister texted me later saying it's one night and co-parenting means sometimes you just [accept] it. My own sister thinks a sleepover is an obvious no and can't believe I'm even losing sleep over it. So, not much help from either direction. And I am losing sleep over it. Part of me thinks I'm being territorial about a room nobody even uses, when all she wanted was to be there when he opened his presents. But it's my home too, and the thought of her sleeping down the hall just didn't sit right with me, and I'm having a hard time explaining exactly why.

This comment summed up the consequences of doing this perfectly
via BlindUmpBobAlso, it's not like she lives 2 hours away. She lives 25 minutes away! If she really wants to be there when her son wakes up, she'll set an early alarm and get there early! It's not her ex's partner's job to make sure that she wakes up on time.
